Cowards on the Mound & The IL Scavenger Hunt: Week 1 Kickoff!

Welcome back to Freddy Beach Baseball! The 2026 season has officially begun, and while some managers came out swinging, others spent the week hiding in the dugout. Between a total lack of pitching bravery and a "sour grapes" inducing frenzy on the waiver wire, Week 1 set a chaotic tone for the year.

MASH Monsters & Top Performers

The first crown of the year goes to Ads, who absolutely pulverized the competition. Handsy McNasty put up a terrifying MASH of 87-19-4, leading the league in almost every hitting category and boasting a K/9 that would make Randy Johnson blush.

Other notable starts:

  • Doug (Bronx Bombers): A rock-solid MASH of 72-25-13. (HEAVY Asterisk: more on that in a bit...)
  • Forgy (Ricky Vaughn): Coming off a strong 2025, he posted a respectable 59-41-10.

Matchup Mayhem: The Official Results

Here's how the opening battles unfolded:

  • Handsy McNasty (Ads) dismantled The Beetle Bunch (Ben) 9-1-0.
  • Bronx Bombers (Doug) took down JOBU (Jordy) 7-2-1.
  • BaseOnBalls (Walks) beat Staff Infection (Turg) 6-3-1.
  • Ricky Vaughn (Forge) and chicksDigtheLongball (Luke) fought to a 5-5-0 tie.
  • TNTNT (The Thompson Boys) edged Raleigh Caps (G) 5-3-2.
  • Bro Bichette (Zach) and Welcome to the Jungle (Neate) ended in a 4-4-2 tie.

Focus on the Big Stories: Cowards and Scavengers

"Cowards Abound!"

We need to talk about the pitching—or lack thereof. With the 30 Innings Pitched minimum not yet a factor in the early going, several managers decided to play "hide the starter." Zach, Forgy, and Jordy all failed to cross the 20-IP mark, but Doug, unsurprisingly, was the slimiest coward of them all, racking up only 7.2IP in the first "week" of the season. It was a week of gaming the system to protect ratios, and frankly, the "Coward Strategy" was in full effect. If you're too scared to start your pitchers in Week 1, it's going to be a long summer.

The Great IL Land Grab

The waiver wire looked like a Black Friday sale for hospital beds. While the Commish was busy actually managing his active roster, everyone else was sprinting to add every injured body they could find to stash in IL slots. It's a savvy move for "cheap reinforcements" later, but let's be honest—it's mostly just making the rest of us (mostly Luke) look slow on the trigger.

This Week's Hard Luck Award 😢

The award goes to Neate (Welcome to the Jungle). Neate actually put up a decent fight with a MASH of 47-51-12 (7th best). Despite outperforming the league cellar, he couldn't secure a win and had to settle for a 4-4-2 tie against Zach. After finishing 12th in the standings last year, Neate was looking for a statement win; instead, he got a "at least you tried" participation ribbon.

This Week's "Got Away With One" Award 🍀

One man's misfortune is another man's treasure... Zach (Killer) is the luckiest in the league this week. Bro Bichette posted a dismal MASH of 33-63-14—the second-worst performance in the league. By all accounts, he should have been buried. However, because he faced Neate (and perhaps some timely luck in the SV/NW categories), he escaped with a tie. You won't get away with a MASH like that against the big hitters, Zach!

Dumpster Fire of the Week: The Beetle Bunch 🔥

Ben (Beeg), what happened? A MASH of 39-60-11 and a 9-1 H2H thrashing at the hands of Ads. The Beetle Bunch looked more like a beetle under a boot this week. After finishing 12th in the 2023 standings and 9th last year, Ben really needed a hot start to avoid the "last place buys the chips" anxiety. This wasn't it.

The Homer Cup 🏆

The reigning Homer Cup champion for Week 1 is Turg (Staff Infection) with 8 Home Runs!

After his "Cinderella Story" miracle run to win the title in 2025, Turg is clearly keeping the power bats warm. He narrowly beat out Doug and Jordy (7 HR each) to take the first trophy of the season.

Standings Snapshot

  1. Handsy McNasty (9-1-0) - Ads is the early titan.
  2. Bronx Bombers (7-2-1) - Doug's ratio-shaving worked... for now.
  3. BaseOnBalls (6-3-1) - Walks starts in the top 3.

...

  1. The Beetle Bunch (1-9-0) - Ben has some work to do.

Good luck in Week 2! Try to actually pitch some innings this time. ☘️
